Operations manager, Mark Buckley, and his team were excited to welcome students recently from Ladysmith Secondary to Western’s Saltair sawmill. The tour extended the students’ learning outside of their woodshop classroom with a first-hand look at the equipment, technology and people that produce lumber, like the wood materials they use in school. It was also a great opportunity to see how the skills and interests they’re developing now, could transfer into local, well-paying careers. The Saltair mill, one of six of the company’s sawmills on Vancouver Island, is the largest single-line sawmill on the coast of B.C. following over $45 million investments to modernize the sawmill since 2013.
