WFP’s fencing products are available in Western Red Cedar and Japanese Cedar
Western Red Cedar is a beautiful wood with natural properties that make it a popular choice for long-lasting exterior applications. Western Red Cedar fibers are rich in natural compounds that can act as preservatives, providing the wood with a resistance to moisture, decay, and insects.
Japanese Cedar, which is also known as Sugi, has been used for centuries in Japan and boasts a fine, straight grain and inter-grown knot structure that can be desirable for applications like fencing, particularly when cost is a factor. The Japanese cedar products can be long-lasting with easy maintainance.
- Both Western Red Cedar and Japanese Cedar fencing can be allowed to weather naturally to a silvery grey look, or a wide range of stains and coatings can be applied to encourage maximum performance.
- For best results coat all six sides before installation.
- New cedar fencing that is going to be finished should be protected from the weather before finish is applied.
- Allow the product to acclimatize to the environment where it will be installed to avoid unwanted shrinkage or expansion.
- Fasteners with corrosion resistance should be used, like hot-dipped galvanized or stainless steel.
- Maintain the fence by keeping it free of dirt and debris.
- Important: Never power-wash cedar because it can damage the wood fibers.

Surface Textures
Fence posts, boards and rails are available in both clear and knotty grades and come in a several different surface textures.
Saw-textured
A textured surface where the blade marks, created during the milling process when a circular saw or band saw is used, are visible on all four sides of the wood.
Rougher-headed
A more pronounced, “rougher” surface texture created in the milling process when roughened planer knives are used. The surface is visible on all four sides and creates a pleasant, rustic look.
Surfaced Four Sides
Usually referred to as S4S, all four sides of the board or post have been smoothed to present a uniform, elegant finish for a high-end look.
Surfaced One Side, Two Edges
Known as S1S2E, one side of the board is smooth, and the other is textured, allowing you to use either for your exposed view.
Rough-Sawn / Rougher-Headed
Often used for a traditional, rustic-style fence, circular or band saws, or roughened planer knives are used to create a roughened surface visible on all four sides.
